Nap Ticket

A short nap at the right moment beats a long one at the wrong moment.

Nap TicketOne good nap, planned for the time you have

Tell the page when you can lie down, when you must be up and when you go to bed tonight. It prices four fares - quiet rest, a power nap, a coffee nap and a full cycle - says which fit, and punches the pick onto a ticket with every stop's clock time. One run reads your note and writes your ticket: what to do before you lie down, when the alarm goes, and tonight.

Sets the lie-down time to now and keeps the window length.

2 The fare board free

Tap a fare to see its ticket. The pick follows the rule below; only a run reads your note.

    3 The conductor's ticket

One run reads your times, your note and the fare board, and picks one fare, checked in this order: quiet rest if no nap fits, or if your note says you often sleep badly at night (a daytime nap can make that worse); a full cycle if it fits and you slept under 6 hours or a late night is next; a coffee nap if it fits and you are driving or working next, or a power nap does not fit; otherwise a power nap. Then two to four steps for before you lie down and for when the alarm goes, what to do if sleep does not come, a caution when driving is next, and a line about tonight. Not medical advice.

    How the fares are priced

Every number here is a rule of thumb - an estimate, not a measurement, and people differ. The page assumes about 10 minutes to drift off. A power nap sets the alarm 30 minutes after you lie down (about 20 minutes asleep, before deep sleep sets in) and allows 10 minutes to shake off grogginess. A coffee nap starts with a cup of coffee drunk quickly, lies down 5 minutes later and sets the alarm 20 minutes after that, around when the caffeine is expected to start working. A full cycle sets the alarm 100 minutes after you lie down (about 90 asleep) and allows 15 minutes. Quiet rest is up to 20 minutes lying still with your eyes closed - sleep is not the goal.

A nap fare fits when it ends - grogginess included, and the 15-minute wait when driving is next - by the time you must be up, and its alarm leaves enough time before bed: at least 5 hours for a power nap, 6 for a coffee nap or a full cycle. If you are driving next, the ticket's stub says to wait at least 15 minutes after waking, and never to drive while still drowsy. Feeling very sleepy most days despite enough sleep at night is worth mentioning to a doctor.
